Furnace Care

Your furnace has an air filter that should be replaced approximately every two to three months, depending on usage and filter. Furnaces have been wired to keep the blower running 24/7 in order to manage indoor humidity levels.

Using a smart thermostat like the Nest Learning Thermostat will monitor how often the fan is on, and will remind you when you should change your filter. (Easy install and highly recommend!)

Filters can be purchased from places like Home Depot or Costco, and you most likely have a 16"x25"x1" filter in your home. Most filters are designed to work in a particular direction, as noted by the arrow on the filter. The arrow should be pointed toward the furnace unit.

Please note that many units had the lip of the furnace room closet built too high and too close to where the furnace is situated, making it challenging to get the filters in and out. You will likely have to compress the filter vertically in order to replace the filter.

Gas shut off valuves for each gas appliance and the mainline can be found in the furnace room closet. If you ever smell gas inside the home or garage, shut off the main valve, go outside, and call the FortisBC Emergency Line at 1-800-633-9911 or call 911.

Air Conditioning

For homes equipped with an air conditioning unit, annual maintenance is recommended to ensure that drainage is not blocked and the coil is kept clean.

Additionally, you may wish to purchase a breathable cover to keep debris and snow out during the colder parts of the year.
